Grayswood is a small village of some 700 inhabitants in the South West tip of Surrey, just a couple of miles to the North of Haslemere and some 12 miles South of Guildford. Grayswood is a thriving village with the cricket club very much at the heart of the community. There is evidence that cricket has been played on the village green in Grayswood since the start of last century; the Millennium marked the second century of cricket being played.
The current club was reformed in 1989 by a group of like-minded villagers keen for a game of cricket. In the first years, the Club played a string of Sunday friendlies mostly with nomad sides. A lot of effort was also spent on producing a square fit for cricket. The Club quickly went from strength to strength and soon began to offer youth cricket.
A key moment in the Club's history came at the end of the 1996 season when the Club decided it was ready to move up to league cricket and was accepted into the I'Anson League Division IV for 1997. The move into league cricket also coincided with applications for funding from the National Lottery and other bodies to improve the facilities. Total funds of £20,000 were raised and used to provide two lane outdoor practice nets, scorebox and other equipment. The facilities at the Club are now amongst the very best in the County.
However, it is youth cricket that is the real strength of the Club. The Youth Section was started in 1989 with twelve boys from the Village and has now expanded to a membership of 100 plus. Boys and girls of seven and upwards are welcomed into the Youth Section. Each of the age groups now run teams in the Local Leagues at Under 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 levels, as well as an Under 13 girls team. Many boys also play representative cricket for Surrey and Hampshire District and County Cricket.
From the occasional Sunday friendly the club now boasts a Senior 1st XI Saturday side in the l'Anson League Division I, having gained promotion as Champions of Division II in 2004; a 2nd XI in Division IV having ended as Champions of Division V in 2006; and a 3rd and 4th XI development sides in Division V.
Grayswood Cricket Club, whilst one of the smaller clubs has the organisational structure and facilities that are the envy of many of its bigger rival, was accredited the coveted ECB ClubMark status in March 2007.
In bowler friendly conditions, 4th team skipper Gavin Cooper lost the toss and his Alfold II counterpart, Adrian Erricker, unsurprisingly elected to bowl first. This decision was soon vindicated with
